'Tattoo' Jesse Avery began his illustrious tattoo career in the bitterly cold and windtorn reaches of Dutch Harbor and the Bering Sea, whilst working on crabbing boats in the early 80's (that's right folks, you've seen it on T.V.!)
He apprenticed to Darrell Ray at Skinprint in Seattle in 1985,taking a job at Tattoo Technique in Bremerton in 1990. Tattoo Technique was opened by Temple Drake in 1973 and when it was fire-bombed and burnt down in 1994, Temple took Jesse as a partner in the business and moved the location to Burwell Street. Temple passed away in June of 2002. Jesse then moved the business to it's current location at 334 Callow Ave, just down the block from it's original location at 315 1/2.
Jesse's tattoo influences include Mike Malone, Sailor Jerry and Don Nolan. His preferred styles are 'proper' old school , black and grey and tribal tattooing. He has recently spent a couple of years working on and off in Hawaii studying the roots and imagery of Polynesian and Hawaiian traditional tattooing.
Jesse is now working at
Pirates by the Sea Tattoo in Kailua Kona on the Big Island of Hawaii, a joint venture with two other old school tattooers.
